PREPARING FOR THE INTERVIEW USING THE POLYGRAPH
(IUP)
If you are waiting for a polygraph examination (IUP), you should know the following:
- IUP is a non-traumatic and safe for life and health, an interview procedure organized according to special rules, during which, with the help of a polygraph (lie detector), the psychophysiological reactions of the person being interviewed are registered and evaluated in response to stimuli (questions) that are presented
- IUP will be conducted only if you voluntarily give written consent (according to the established form) to this procedure.
- If you are applying for a job, IUP will help you confirm the authenticity of the information you have provided and the absence of any inclinations or hidden facts of your biography that are undesirable for the company.
- If you pass a polygraph test at the place of work, IUP will help confirm your loyalty to the company or remove unfounded suspicions about you of violating the norms of behavior established at work or of committing some actions that caused damage to the interests of the company in which you work.
- Before the tests begin, you will be familiarized with the subject of the survey and with the questions that will be asked to you when the polygraph is turned on.
- During the OVP, you will not be asked questions related to political, religious or racial views, as well as to obtain from you (perhaps known to you from your previous place of work or service) information that constitutes a state or commercial secret, or related to the activities of law enforcement agencies bodies or special services of Ukraine. Also, you will not be asked questions concerning your private life, if they are not the main subject of the polygraph survey.
- The results obtained in the course of the IUP are of a confidential and legal orientation nature, are not subject to disclosure and will be available only to the customer of the survey – a private person or a company (the head of the company and the head of the company’s security service).
What is a polygraph?
A modern polygraph (lie detector) is a complex computer hardware system for measuring the level of psychological stress in a person, which allows revealing hidden information. The word “polygraph” literally means “many records” in Greek, indicating the polygraph’s ability to simultaneously record the values of several physiological functions of the body, for example, breathing, skin conductance, pulse rate, blood pressure, and others. Recorded readings are sometimes very subtle physiological changes that occur in the subject when they are asked questions about a specific area of investigation. These records (polygrams), recorded in the form of graphs on the computer screen, are then processed by a special program and a polygraph examiner. As a result, an unequivocal conclusion is formed about the truthfulness of the answers on the proposed negative topic.
How accurate is the polygraph?
The latest research in the field of lie detection shows that the accuracy of new computer polygraphs is close to 100 percent. Over the past 75 years, more than 250 studies have been conducted on the reliability, accuracy, and reliability of polygraph examinations (American Polygraph Association 1996 Polygraph Issues & Answers). Based on twelve separate studies involving 2,174 real cases since 1980, the accuracy of polygraph decisions is 98% (Ansley, N.1990 Validity and Realibility of Polygraph Decisions in Real Cases).
How long does a polygraph test take?
Depending on the complexity of the case and the purpose of the test, the duration of the polygraph examination ranges from one to several hours.
Does nervousness affect the results of a polygraph examination?
No, it does not affect. All polygraph examiners know that every person taking a polygraph test is nervous, regardless of whether they are going to answer the questions truthfully or falsely. Usually, the interviewee is nervous throughout the test, and not only when the polygraph examiner asks him a question. Therefore, a special program and a polygraph examiner unmistakably track the specific reactions of the interviewed person to negative questions, the answers to which are the actual purpose of this examination. If these reactions are present at the moment, then, as a rule, they exceed the level of reactions caused by ordinary excitement several times.
Persons who have nothing to hide on the proposed topic and specific questions usually try to cooperate with the polygraph examiner and feel rather not fear of the polygraph, but ordinary excitement, which quickly passes or noticeably weakens. Therefore, their physiological deviations are much smaller than those who have hidden information on the proposed topic. Practically, both those and other persons have fears related to the polygraph examination. However, the polygraph examiner is obliged to explain the work of the polygraph to everyone who passes the survey, to discuss all the questions that will be asked during the examination. Such mandatory actions significantly reduce the manifestations of tension in persons not involved in concealing significant information, and vice versa, increase tension in those persons who are trying to conceal it.
Is it possible to deceive a polygraph?
In itself, this question is incorrect. For some reason, no one asks the question: “Is it possible to deceive a thermometer that measures body temperature, or a cardiograph that detects abnormalities in the work of the human cardiovascular system?” A polygraph is the same tool, but for identifying the psychophysiological reactions of the human body in response to a presented stimulus (questions on a certain topic). These reactions are part of the instinct of self-preservation, which, without a doubt, is the main human instinct. And the concept of “lie” is just a tool of this very instinct of self-preservation, which a person uses when he understands that he will be responsible for those negative actions that he tries to hide during the polygraph test. Therefore, each interviewee must be clearly aware that if he lies, the polygraph will definitely detect the lie, and the computer polygraph program will not leave the slightest chance to hide it from detection by a specialist. The experience of using polygraphs indicates almost 100% accuracy of the data obtained. In addition, any polygraph examiner must be trained to detect various countermeasures that are sometimes used by interviewed persons with the intention of “deceiving” the polygraph.
